As I was doing more thorough research, trying to get these illustrations together to put into a book, I realized my source for the first version of this legend sucked. Completely unreliable. How did I miss that? Anyway, the "real" version of this legend was way less interesting, so I decided to go with a different legend altogether.
However, still needing a letter "D", I decided to look at legends of other devils gates around America. Luckily I found a very interesting one! This one hails from Libertyville, Illinois. And luckily I like this second painting even better than the first!
